What types of folding cartons are there?
The choice of the right folding carton depends on the intended use, the desired design and the stability. Whether for simple product packaging or luxurious presentations - there is a suitable shape for every need.
Here we show you some basic shapes and variables:
Insert tabs
A folding box with tuck-in flaps is a popular packaging solution made of cardboard or corrugated cardboard that is characterised by its easy handling, space-saving storage and versatility.
Advantage: Simple assembly; easy to open and reclose.
Equilateral insertion tabs
Symmetrical & quick to close
In the case of folding cartons with equal-sided tuck-in flaps, both flaps are on the same side of the opening. This enables particularly quick and easy closing, ideal for the manual packaging process. This variant is often used for lighter products or in the cosmetics and food industries.
Offset tuck-in flaps
Offset tuck-in flaps offer the advantage that the flaps overlap, providing more stability and better product protection. This design is particularly suitable for heavier or more sensitive products, for example in the electronics or pharmaceutical industries.
Floors
As an alternative to a tuck-in flap, the packaging can be closed on one side with an integrated base. Two variants are particularly common here: the tuck-in bottom and the automatic bottom. Both offer stable and practical solutions for the bottom closure of the box
Plug-in base
- One long side gluing,
- Floor without gluing for plugging together
Stable closure for folding boxes
Several flaps are inserted into each other in the plug-in base. This design offers a stable hold without gluing and is ideal for medium-weight products. Folding cartons with a tuck-in base can be erected quickly and closed securely
Automatic floor (flash floor)
- One long side gluing,
- glued to the floor, aligns itself during installation
Quick and safe erection
The automatic bottom is a particularly time-saving bottom solution for folding boxes. Thanks to a pre-glued construction, the base automatically straightens when the box is opened - without any manual folding. Ideal for fast packaging, large quantities and heavy products, the automatic bottom offers maximum stability and efficiency.
Other shapes
As an alternative to a tuck-in flap, the packaging can be closed on one side with an integrated base. Two variants are particularly common here: the tuck-in bottom and the automatic bottom. Both offer stable and practical solutions for the bottom closure of the box
Sliding box (drawer box)
- Consists of an outer cover (banderole) and an internal drawer
- High-quality look, ideal for luxury products or gift packaging
Elegant packaging with practical function
The sliding box is an elegant and functional version of the folding box, consisting of an outer sleeve (band) and a pull-out inner box (drawer). It is perfect for high-quality products such as cosmetics, jewellery, electronics or promotional gifts. Thanks to the elegant "drawer" principle, the sliding box provides a special unboxing experience, can be customised and is ideal for branding.
Pillow box
- Curved, cushion-like shape without classic corners
- Particularly suitable for small, lightweight products or promotional gifts
Telescope box (two-part box)
- Consists of separate base and lid
- Particularly stable and suitable for fine products such as jewellery or watches
Classic folding box with two-part structure
The slip lid box consists of two separate parts: a base and a lid that is simply slipped on. This classic and high-quality packaging solution is ideal for gift packaging, presents, cosmetics or electronics. Thanks to its sturdy construction and large print area, it is perfect for customised branding - stylish and prestigious packaging that is easy to open and close.
Hinged lid box
- With attached lid
- High-quality optics, often for electronics or luxury items
The hinged lid box is a functional packaging solution with a permanently attached lid that can be folded back. This design is ideal for shipping packaging, gift boxes or product presentations. Thanks to its easy handling, secure closure and large print area, the hinged lid box is both practical and effective for advertising - perfect for e-commerce, retail and events.
